Overview:

BlueLena Guide: Wisepops is an advanced popup builder that uses notifications, countdown timers and other onsite messaging to drive newsletter signups.

Why would I use Wisepops?

  • Publications use Wisepops to grow their newsletter lists and overall audience.
  • Wisepops allows you to combine your popups into multi-step campaigns for on-site deployment.
    • These allow you to reduce friction on your overall popups, as custom contact fields and survey data can be collected at post sign-up “steps”, where all data from each step is automatically synced into ActiveCampaign once that step is completed.
  • Wisepops is easy to use and offers a no-code popup builder.
  • Wisepops offers segmenting and advanced targeting options for your on-site messaging/popups.

Why would a publication choose Wisepops over other platforms?

  • Wisepops offers A/B testing for on-site messaging and popups, which isn’t available across other tech platforms.
  • Wisepops can be easily integrated or used in conjunction with several other platforms that are common to BlueLena publishers.
    • These platforms include but are not limited to: Wordpress, WooCommerce, Stripe and ActiveCampaign.
  • If a publication is already using a monetization platform such as Stripe Direct, then it wouldn’t need a full monetization/registration tool, but rather a platform for readers to manage newsletter preferences and deploy on-site messaging/popups. Wisepops fits this bill and is often the best choice when looking for advanced popup offerings alone.

For instructions on how to add Wisepops to your website, you can find documentation on all the different methods (CMS integration, Google Tag Manager, Custom Website, etc.) here.

How does a contact register for newsletters?

  • The contact will need to navigate to your website and depending on how you have configured Wisepops popups, the contact will either see a direct popup, an-inline form or a banner asking them to enter their email to sign up for newsletters.
    • Some publications only have one newsletter and therefore contacts will know they’re signing up for a specific newsletter.
    • Some other publications offer multiple newsletters, and they will offer contacts the option of which newsletters they want to sign-up for via a checkboxes field.

How does a contact update their newsletter preferences?

  • Wisepops doesn’t offer a direct account management system, so there are two options for a contact to update newsletter preferences.
    • The first option is the standard route, and this is done through ActiveCampaign emails. When a contact has signed up for your newsletters, they will receive these newsletter communications via ActiveCampaign emails going forward. On any of these emails that they receive, they should see a link at the bottom of any email with an option to “Manage Preferences”.

  • The contact will enter their email and then select/de-select the newsletters that they would like to receive.
  • The second option is that the contact could open up a private browsing tab and then navigate to your website to enter their email in the prompt again, and update newsletter preferences directly.

How do I enable/create popups? What are the general popup design options?

Here’s a link to a video for documentation on setting up your first popup.

  • Upon creating your initial popup, click back into the popup to edit it. You should be able to click the title at the top of the page to rename it:

  • From there, you should be able to use the editor to design the popup. Click on individual elements to edit them.
    • Click on images and use the panel on the left side of the screen to replace them.
    • Text styles/colors can be edited in the bar above the popup design.
    • Button text can be replaced with the panel on the left side of the screen. Color, font size, etc. can be edited with the bar above the popup design.
    • Additionally, you can edit the standard popup size, its positioning on your website, the closing button position, and many more design options for the overall popup itself as compared to designing the content within it.
  • When you have finished “step 1” (AKA the popup design) you should be able to click “step 2” to edit the acknowledgement.

What are the options for display rules?

  • For documentation on all of the different display rules and options that they come with, click here.
    • This documentation lists all five display rules. For further information click the rule specific links on the page linked above.
  • There are some standard display rules that we recommend to the BlueLena clientbase.
    • Triggers: We typically advise that these show On Landing or On Scroll.
    • Page Targeting: We advise that popups should never be shown on a monetization page, a My Account page or a newsletter signup page.
    • Audience: This is the most ambiguous of the display rules, as there really is no standard way to target an audience with such a diverse group of publications that BlueLena manages. However, the one condition here that is highly recommended is to check the box that reads “Exclude existing subscribers”.
    • Frequency: This is also dependent upon the publisher, but we generally lean towards “showing every _ days” and “stop showing after a visitor has signed up or clicked
    • Advanced Targeting: We generally don’t use this feature on most popups, but you can find articles about setting this up here.
