Overview:
BlueLena has released enhancements to its purpose-built CRM and moves management system, adding new capabilities to help nonprofit and independent news organizations manage fundraising more efficiently and strengthen donor relationships.
Built for journalism organizations, BlueLena CRM combines donor intelligence, integrated communications, and structured moves management in one platform.
BlueLena is excited to share the latest enhancements now rolling out across our CRM and moves management system, the journalism industry’s only donor CRM and moves management platform purpose-built for nonprofit news.
Over the past two years, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside more than 250 independent news organizations, including CalMatters, Spotlight PA, The City Reporter, Montclair Local, The American Prospect and many others to help strengthen reader revenue and donor development programs. Together, these organizations have raised more than $80 million in direct reader support since 2024.
Every feature in this latest release was informed by conversations with fundraising, membership, development, and revenue leaders across our publisher network. The result is a set of practical enhancements designed to help teams focus limited resources, improve donor experiences, and uncover new revenue opportunities.
“Independent news organizations are being asked to do more, often with limited fundraising resources, while navigating increasingly complex donor relationships. This release was designed to help development and membership teams focus their time where it can have the greatest impact,” said Megan Wofford, Director of Product, BlueLena.
“From BlueDepth Prioritization, which helps identify the supporters most deserving of 1:1 engagement, to new household-level donor intelligence and segmentation capabilities, these tools give publishers a clearer picture of their audiences and more actionable pathways to revenue growth. We’re excited to continue building solutions specifically for nonprofit and independent newsrooms, informed by the teams doing this work every day.”
Introducing BlueDepth Prioritization
Over the past year, BlueLena has continued expanding BlueDepth™, our proprietary donor intelligence and scoring system developed specifically for nonprofit news organizations.
Unlike traditional wealth screening tools that focus primarily on capacity, BlueDepth combines real-time engagement behavior, reader loyalty, giving history, and demographic signals to identify the supporters most likely to deepen their relationship with your organization.
By transforming audience and donor data into actionable fundraising intelligence, BlueDepth helps publishers uncover major donor prospects, identify emerging giving opportunities, and prioritize outreach based on both affinity and capacity.
One of the most common challenges we hear from development teams is that identifying high-potential prospects is only the first step.
The harder question is often: Where should we focus our time and attention first?
To address this, we’re introducing BlueDepth prioritization, a new framework that transforms donor intelligence into a clear action plan for fundraising teams.
How it works
- High Priority (immediate action). The smallest but highest-value group revealing strong capacity and/or philanthropic intent; warrants intentional 1:1 outreach now. These contacts reflect a history of elevated-membership giving, donor-advised-fund/QCD giving, or premium income. These donor prospects are identified and surfaced continuously as part of weekly development work.
- Mid Priority (near-term cultivation). These prospects warrant intentional relationship investment, but lighter on 1:1 outreach vs. High Priority segments. These donors are highly engaged contacts with past donor history indexing high as recurring donors.
- Lower Priority (long-term signal monitoring). These are high value based on appended data, but lacking the clarity or urgency to justify active cultivation (e.g., highly engaged but never donated). BlueLena’s system-monitoring detects meaningful changes that trigger re-evaluation.
- Membership Track (intentionally disqualified). These prospects have beeen scored and consciously set aside as major gift prospects, but still valuable. They are instead automatically funneled into an elevated-membership paths managed by the membership team, with openness to re-evaluation.
BlueDepth prioritization helps publishers:
- Surface the highest-value major gift prospects requiring immediate attention
- Distinguish between prospects that warrant active relationship management and those better suited for membership growth strategies
- Focus limited development resources on the individuals most likely to drive meaningful revenue impact
- Ensure valuable supporters never fall through the cracks through automated routing and ongoing monitoring
The new framework introduces prioritized pathways for major donor cultivation, long-term prospect development, and elevated membership engagement, helping teams move from simply identifying prospects to taking action on them.
Rather than creating larger prospect lists, BlueDepth prioritization is designed to do the opposite: narrow focus to a small, highly qualified set of supporters most deserving of one-to-one relationship investment.
Expanded household & account-level donor intelligence
We’ve also completed a significant enhancement to donor data standardization across the BlueLena platform.
Historically, many donor insights existed primarily at the individual contact level. While effective for engagement tracking, this sometimes created challenges when managing donor households, spouses, or supporters with multiple contact records.
With this release, publishers can now leverage a standardized set of donor classification fields at both the contact and account levels.
Benefits include:
- More accurate household-based donor segmentation
- Reduced risk of sending acquisition or renewal appeals to members of active donor households
- Cleaner fundraising communications across spouses and related contacts
- Stronger reporting and donor classification workflows
This enhancement gives teams a more complete picture of donor relationships while preserving the flexibility of existing engagement and messaging workflows.
New annual giving threshold fields
We’ve also added new standardized donor classification fields designed to make segmentation and fundraising prioritization easier and more consistent.
Publishers can now quickly identify supporters who have contributed:
- $500+ within any single calendar year
- $1,000+ within any single calendar year
- $5,000+ within a single calendar year
These fields create a permanent record of a donor’s giving history. Once a supporter crosses one of these thresholds in any single calendar year, that milestone is captured and retained. This allows teams to properly segment donors who have ever given at a meaningful threshold, not just those who did so recently, and can quickly snapshot a donor’s best giving year at a glance.
The result is a more sophisticated segmentation tool that reaches beyond the basic Major Donor classification, helping teams re-engage lapsed high-capacity supporters and spot patterns that a rolling 365-day window would otherwise hide.
Combined with BlueDepth intelligence and prioritization, these new fields provide additional signals to help development teams understand both donor capacity and current giving behavior.
Built with and for publishers
One of the advantages of working exclusively with news organizations is the opportunity to learn from the collective experiences of the industry’s leading fundraising teams.
Every enhancement in this release originated from publisher feedback, real-world fundraising workflows, and challenges shared by our partners.
Our goal at BlueLena remains simple: build the infrastructure independent news organizations need to grow sustainable reader revenue and donor support.
For publishers already using BlueLena CRM and MMS, these enhancements are being rolled out across the network now, with additional training and information sessions planned throughout the summer.
