Overview:

By partnering with BlueLena, Ashland.News has increased annualized reader revenues by 123% in six months. Through clear donation-first messaging, smart email cadence, and strategic audience segmentation, Ashland.News is demonstrating that even small, rural newsrooms can drive meaningful fundraising growth with the right strategy enabled by the best infrastructure.

As an independent, nonprofit newsroom serving Ashland and surrounding communities, Ashland.News was created with a mission “to establish a sustainable news service that will inform the civic dialogue and promote cultural engagement by providing accurate, trustworthy and timely local and useful news and information about Ashland and surrounding areas.”

Its vision is equally ambitious: fostering “an informed conversation and effective collaboration” across the community while representing diverse points of view and strengthening civic life.

Since launching in 2022, Ashland.News has become an essential civic institution, providing independent local reporting across government, education, arts and culture, public safety, business, environment, and community affairs while building a deeply engaged local audience.

A member of LION Publishers and the Institute for Nonprofit News, it has become one of Southern Oregon’s most trusted nonprofit news organizations.

In October 2025, Ashland.News partnered with BlueLena to undertake a comprehensive operational and fundraising transformation focused on audience growth, donor development, CRM implementation, revenue operations, and long-term sustainability.

Ashland.News is one of more than fifty nonprofit newsrooms that have adopted BlueLena’s CRM platform, moves management system, audience intelligence tools, and strategic services to strengthen funding support for journalism and build sustainable reader revenue operations.

The results of the partnership have been impressive and transformational.

Since launching with BlueLena:

  • Active newsletter contacts have grown by 37.2%
  • Annualized reader revenue (ARR) has increased by $179,000 (+123%)
  • 21.6% of registered users have converted to paid donors, with 36% as recurring
  • The organization has secured 1,021 new supporters over the past year
  • Average annualized gift size has climbed to $225.02
  • Ashland.News executed 144 campaigns with an average 61.8% open rate and 27.1% click-to-open rate

These outcomes were driven not by isolated fundraising campaigns, but by a deliberate transformation of Ashland.News’ operational infrastructure — including CRM systems, donor pipeline management, audience segmentation, analytics, reporting, staff enablement, and major donor development strategy.

The partnership helped Ashland.News evolve from a fast-growing nonprofit newsroom into a more operationally mature, data-informed, donor-supported media organization equipped for long-term sustainability.

We launched our partnership with BlueLena in October 2025, with an ambitious timeline to get us live before our end-of-year fundraising kickoff on Nov 1. Their team didn’t miss a beat, deploying reader solutions and multiple work streams simultaneously to get us live ahead of our target deadline. That confidence and partnership helped us outperform our fundraising goal and set us up for success in serving our readers and community heading into 2026.

Ashland.News emerged at a time when communities across the country were experiencing the decline of local journalism and the erosion of trusted civic information systems.

Established as an independent nonprofit newsroom, Ashland.News sought to rebuild local news infrastructure by creating a sustainable model rooted in public service, community trust, editorial independence, and direct audience support.

The newsroom quickly established itself as a vital source of local reporting and civic engagement. Its journalism spans local government, education, arts and culture, public safety, environmental reporting, business, community events and civic affairs.

As readership and audience engagement expanded, Ashland.News faced a challenge common to many nonprofit news organizations:

How could it build the operational and fundraising systems necessary to accelerate growth while remaining mission-driven and community-supported?

That question became the foundation of its partnership with BlueLena.

From audience trust to revenue infrastructure

The primary strategic objective of the engagement was to transform Ashland.News from a newsroom enjoying strong audience trust into a newsroom with scalable donor and membership infrastructure to underwrite its journalistic mission and long-term vision.

BlueLena worked with Ashland.News to redesign and operationalize:

  • CRM systems
  • Donor pipeline architecture
  • Audience segmentation
  • Membership workflows
  • Revenue forecasting
  • Campaign operations
  • Major donor cultivation systems
  • Reporting and analytics infrastructure
  • Staff enablement processes
  • Operational accountability systems

Rather than approaching fundraising as a series of campaigns, the partnership focused on building durable operational systems capable of sustaining long-term reader revenue growth.

The transformation began with a comprehensive CRM audit and operational assessment.

BlueLena evaluated:

  • Existing donor workflows
  • Data architecture
  • Pipeline management practices
  • Segmentation readiness
  • Reporting capabilities
  • Operational bottlenecks
  • Staff coordination systems
  • Revenue visibility and forecasting

This assessment became the blueprint for implementation.

The goal was not simply to improve software usage, but to build a newsroom-specific donor operations infrastructure capable of scaling alongside audience growth.

BlueLena implemented a structured CRM operational framework that standardized donor development and revenue management processes across the organization.

This work included:

  • Opportunity tracking systems
  • Donor lifecycle management
  • Pipeline workflows
  • Revenue reporting
  • Segmentation systems
  • Campaign tracking
  • Major donor management
  • Moves management processes

BlueLena also developed a multi-stage CRM enablement curriculum to support organization-wide adoption.

Training included:

  • CRM 101 Welcome Curriculum
  • Orientation & System Overview
  • Deal Management Basics
  • Reporting & Segmentation Training

These systems institutionalized operational knowledge and created greater consistency across donor engagement, reporting, and campaign execution.

The impact was measurable:

  • Annualized reader revenue increased by $179,000 or +123%
  • More than 1,000 new supporters were acquired
  • Average annualized donor value exceeded $225

A major component of the engagement involved the deployment of BlueDepth, BlueLena’s audience intelligence and donor analytics platform.

BlueDepth enabled Ashland.News to:

  • Identify high-propensity donor audiences
  • Improve segmentation
  • Prioritize donor outreach
  • Analyze supporter behavior
  • Optimize fundraising performance
  • Improve conversion pathways

This transformation significantly improved the organization’s ability to convert audience engagement into donor support.

Since launching with BlueLena:

  • Active newsletter contacts increased by 37.2%
  • Registered-user-to-donor conversion reached 21.6%
  • 36% of donors joined recurring giving plans

These conversion metrics significantly outperform many nonprofit publishing benchmarks and demonstrate the effectiveness of combining audience intelligence with structured donor operations.

BlueLena worked closely with Ashland.News to institutionalize donor stewardship and major gift cultivation processes.

The engagement included:

  • Moves management implementation
  • Donor touchpoint planning
  • Pipeline visibility systems
  • Stewardship workflows
  • Opportunity management
  • Revenue forecasting
  • Relationship tracking
  • Membership operations coaching

Dedicated office hours and strategic coaching sessions focused specifically on donor cultivation and major donor touchpoint management.

This operational maturity helped Ashland.News scale donor growth while improving donor quality and retention.

Over the course of the partnership:

  • Ashland.News secured 1,021 new supporters
  • Average annualized gift size reached $225.02
  • Recurring donor participation grew to 36%

The organization strengthened not only acquisition performance, but also long-term donor sustainability.

One of the clearest indicators of operational transformation was the newsroom’s campaign execution performance.

Since launching with BlueLena:

  • Ashland.News executed 144 campaigns
  • Campaigns achieved a 61.8% average open rate
  • Campaigns generated a 27.1% average click-to-open rate

These metrics substantially outperform industry norms and reflect:

  • Strong audience trust
  • Effective segmentation
  • Sophisticated targeting
  • Consistent donor communications
  • Improved membership operations

The organization developed a disciplined engagement infrastructure capable of sustaining high-performing audience and donor communications at scale. The relationship between Ashland.News and BlueLena extended far beyond traditional consulting.

“I have worked as a major gifts officer with both very large and small organizations and used many CRM systems. So far my experience with Blue Lena is that it is designed for precisely our type of organizations, the fundraising experience of the staff really shows in the design, and it has made a huge difference in our success in the past year.”

With a rapidly growing donor base and exceptionally high engagement-to-giving conversion, Ashland.news is well-positioned for its next phase of growth. The biggest opportunity ahead: converting newly activated donors into sustainers and increasing mid-level gifts, while maintaining the clarity and discipline that powered its early success.
